Do Staffordshire Terriers Make A Good Family Pet?Staffy’s or Staffordshire Terriers are a phenominally strong and muscular dog, which are sometimes known as Pit Bull Terriers. The mention of Pit Bull evokes strong opinions and emotions in people, mostly due to misunderstanding and incomplete media reports. The breed is undoubtedly powerful and courageous especially compared to other dogs of their size (this is why they were used a fighting dogs). These dogs have a distinctive appearance largely due to their wide head with sometimes bulgeing jaw muscles.Their entire head is quite large compared to dog of the same body size. Their ears are on the smallish side, sitting high up on the head, some breeders choose to crop the ears which I oppose. Their usually dark eyes are set relatively far apart. The body is completely muscled and covered with short stiff easily managed hair. Their wide set front legs give the dog great stability and a poweful appearance. A medium to short tail completes the Staffy’s handsome prone.Coloring of the breed is varied and can be any solid or mixed color. I may be biased but I believe they are quite photogenic The character of the inappropriately named pit bull has maligned an otherwise great dog. We have all heard the stories of out of control Pit Bulls injuring or killing dogs, small children and even an adult. Some countries have placed poorly thought out restrictions on ownership of the breed. It is important to investigate fully. These incidents were almost universally the result of brutal treatment or training by thoughtless owners. Staffys are loyal, intellingent and eager to please. Add this eagerness to their strength and some inappropriate training, the result can be frightening. Here is a useful dog training guide. In complete contrast the Am Staffys natural character is very docile and friendly. They are often so friendly to strangers that they make poor guard dogs despite their sometimes intimidating looks. It should be noted that many Staffordshire Terriers(particularly the american breed) can display aggressive behaviour toward other dogs and animals. The answer to this is “socialisation” and training with other dogs early in life. Just to push the point, Staffy Training is essential. Staffy’s have an undying devotion to their family and an almost obsessive need to be appreciated by their master. Staffys can be somewhat exitable. They are full of love and excitement. If you are looking for a quiet dog, then a staffy is the WRONG Choice. They are boistrous and love playing. Care: All sub breeds of the Staffordshire Terrier need a good deal of regular exercise. Their idea of fun is a brisk walk or a play and a run out in the open. Pit Bulls are generally easy to train(especially when they are young). Be sure to actively stop any agressive behaviour towards others while the pup is young. This will ensure harmony in later years. Staffordshire terriers from a strong bond with their family “pack” and thus fare better mentally living indoors at night. Their short coarse coat makes brushing easy. It is also easier to locate ticks if they are prevelant where you live. It simply involves very occasional brushing with and stiff brush to remove loose or dead hair. Known health issues in the breed include canine hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, cerebellar ataxia, hypothyroidism and heart disease. Staffies are really rocket powered, with some suffering gas problems. As the breed has far less hair on its stomach, and loves to sunbake, mast cell tumours can prevail on and around the stomach area.
